RUNZA SENIORS FALL TO HASTINGS IN HOME OPENER:
The Runza Seniors gave up six runs in the top of the sixth in what was a tie game at three-all, falling 8-4 in the final frame in the home opener of the Legion season at Memorial Field Wednesday night.
The loss drops Runza to 0-7 on the season. Hastings Five Points Bank improves to 7-0 on the year with the win.
The Runza Seniors now travel to Omaha for the wood-bat tournament at Omaha Central.
HUSKER SOFTBALL’S YBARRA NAMED ALL-AMERICAN:
Senior Cam Ybarra was honored as an All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Wednesday.
Ybarra is the first Husker to be an All-American since Nebraska had two All-Americans in 2016. Ybarra is only the fourth second baseman to earn All-America honors in program history and the first since 2005.
The All-America award capped a decorated senior season for Ybarra. In addition to being recognized as an All-American, Ybarra was a first-team All-Midwest Region honoree and a first-team All-Big Ten selection while earning a spot on the Big Ten All-Defensive team.
Ybarra hit .365 this spring with 14 doubles, 10 homers and 39 RBIs. She led Nebraska in hits (65), doubles (14) and triples (3), while ranking second on the team with a .646 slugging percentage.
WALLACE EARNS GOLD GLOVE AWARD FOR NEBRASKA SOFTBALL:
Senior pitcher Courtney Wallace was announced as a Rawlings/NFCA Gold Glove Award recipient by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Wednesday.
The 2022 season marks the first time that Rawlings Sporting Goods Company is presenting the Gold Glove Award to NCAA Division I softball athletes. Nine student-athletes from across the country – one at each defensive position – were presented the award by the NFCA, with Wallace earning the nod as the top defensive pitcher in the nation.
Wallace was also a third-team All-Midwest Region honoree and a Big Ten All-Defensive team selection. She was also named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team after posting two wins in Nebraska’s three-game path to its first Big Ten Tournament title, including a relief victory over Michigan in the championship game.
SERGEEV NAMED USHL GOALTENDER OF THE YEAR:
Tri-City Storm goaltender Arsenii Sergeev has been named the USHL Goaltender of the Year for the 2021-2022 season. Sergeev joins former Storm goaltenders Filip Larsson and Isaiah Saville as the third player in organizational history to win the award.
He led the USHL in multiple goaltending statistical categories during the 2021-2022 regular season including Wins (30,) Goals Against Average (2.08), Save Percentage (0.918%), and Shutouts (6). His thirty wins during the 2021-2022 regular season were the most in a single-season by a goaltender in the organization’s twenty-two-year history.
Sergeev was named the USHL’s “Goaltender of the Week” four times during the regular season, the most of any goaltender in the league this year.
Tri-City has now racked up three postseason awards including: Sergeev’s Goaltender of the Year, Mitchell Miller earning Player of the Year and Defenseman of the Year, and Jeremy Wilmer winning Forward of the Year.

FORMER LOPER SANGER TO LEAD BERTRAND GIRLS BASKETBALL:
A former UNK Women’s basketball star will take her talents from the hardwood of the Health & Sports Center to Bertrand High School where she will take the reins of the girls basketball team.
Kelsey Cole, formerly Kelsey Sanger, was hired as the Bertrand High School girls basketball head coach earlier this week. As a four year starter for UNK, Sanger helped the team reach the Sweet 16 in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. She was also a three-time member of the All-MIAA team.
OLD GUARD RODGERS, BRADY WIN ‘THE MATCH’ OVER YOUNG GUNS MAHOMES, ALLEN:
Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers know a thing or two about winning NFL games on clutch plays inside the final 2 minutes. The pair of future Pro Football Hall of Famers carried that into ‘The Match’ last night with Rodgers sinking a 15 foot putt in the final hole to earn the win over Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.
Wednesday marked the sixth iteration of The Match overall but the first that did not include any professional golfers. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau have all been prominently involved, as have Peyton Manning, Rodgers and Brady over the past few years. Mahomes and Allen were new to the party, but they certainly entertained and brought a ton of fans out with Chiefs Kingdom and Bills Mafia both well-represented.
