The Huskers’ Big Red Blitz will be touring the state Wednesday. Capacity is limited for each event, and fans will be admitted free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Blitz will make a 2:30 afternoon appearance at the Younes Conference Center South in Kearney. Guests will include Head Football Coach Scott Frost, Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Nate Loenser and Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development Ben Murray. The stop will be emceed by the voice of the Huskers Greg Sharpe.
A group that includes Men’s Basketball Head Coach Fred Hoiberg, Assistant Football Coach Travis Fisher and Senior Deputy Athletic Director John Johnson will be making a noon appearance at Grand Island’s Bosselman Conference Center, and a 4:00 stop at the Lochland Country Club in Hastings. Kent Pavelka, Huskers Radio Network Men’s Basketball Play-by-Play will be the emcee.
Assistant Football Coach Sean Beckton and Men’s Basketball Director of Player Development Buzzy Caruthers will be at the Nautical Rose at Johnson Lake Wednesday at noon, and JB Sport’s Bar and Grill in Holdrege at 4:00.
Assistant Football Coach Ryan Held, Football Head Strength Coach Zach Duval and Senior Offensive Analyst Ron Brown will be at the Loup City Community Center at noon, and Kinkaider Brewing in Broken Bow at 4:30.
In recruiting news: Ohio State transfer Tyreke Johnson, a defensive back who was a five-star recruit out of high school in Florida, announced his commitment to the Huskers over the weekend. Johnson entered the transfer portal on May 12th. He was ranked as the 21st best prospect in the nation by 247Sports composite in 2018. He played just 77 snaps for the Buckeyes last season, and was projected to be a reserve again this year. Johnson still has three years of eligibility remaining.
The Nebraska football team wraps up their recruiting camp schedule this week with the 2nd Friday Night Lights event (June 18th) and the Adidas Pipeline camp (June 19th).
Nebraska had six more official visitors in Lincoln this past weekend. The list includes:
– Ashton Hayes, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound three-star running back from Reno, Nevada.
– Tyler Martin, a 6-foot 3, 235-pound three-star linebacker from the Boston-area. (A former Michigan commit)
– Avery Powell, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound three-star defensive back from Jersey City, New Jersey.
– Hayden Schwartz , a 6-foot-4, 244-pound defensive end from Jacksonville, Florida.
– Markeith Williams, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound safety from Orlando, Florida.
– Grant Page, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound wideout from Boulder, Colorado.
The Nebraska volleyball team’s regular season schedule was released Friday by the Big Ten. The Huskers will begin the season on Aug. 27-28 by hosting Tulsa, Colgate and Kansas State in a tournament at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The following weekend, the Huskers will host Omaha, Georgia and Arizona State. Nebraska will face in-state foe Creighton at the CHI Health Center Omaha on Wednesday, Sept. 8 before returning home to host Utah on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Utes reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Omaha this spring and were ranked No. 17 in the final AVCA Coaches Poll. The Huskers’ final week of non-conference action will feature a road trip to Stanford on Sept. 14 and a home match on Sept. 18 against Louisville, coached by former Husker player and assistant coach Dani Busboom Kelly. The Cardinals reached an NCAA Regional Semifinal in the spring and finished the year at No. 11 in the AVCA Coaches Poll. Nebraska’s 20-match Big Ten schedule features single-play matches against Northwestern (road), Michigan (home), Michigan State (home), Minnesota (road), Ohio State (road) and Maryland (home). The Huskers will play home-and-home series against Iowa, Penn State, Rutgers, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin. The University of Nebraska Athletic Department is planning for 100 percent capacity for all home fall sporting events. Online season ticket renewals for volleyball will be available within the next two weeks.
Incoming Nebraska freshmen Ally Batenhorst, Lindsay Krause and Lexi Rodriguez are among the 20 players named by USA Volleyball to the 2021 Women’s Indoor U20 National Training Team. They will participate in a training camp in Las Vegas, Nevada. That camp will determine the 12-player roster that will compete at the 2021 FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship in the Netherlands and Belgium. Dan Fisher, head volleyball coach at the University of Pittsburgh, will lead the 2021 U20 National Team.
