HUSKER VOLLEYBALL ANNOUNCES 2023 SCHEDULE:

The Nebraska volleyball program and the Big Ten Conference announced the 2023 schedule on Wednesday.

The Huskers will begin the 2023 campaign on Aug. 25-27 by hosting Utah State, Lipscomb and SMU in a tournament at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

In week two, the Big Red will play Omaha on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Volleyball Day in Nebraska match in Memorial Stadium.

NU is back at home on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. to host Creighton for the first time since 2019.

In Big Ten Conference play, Nebraska’s seven double-play opponents are Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers and Wisconsin.

Full schedule details can be found at KGFW.com.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL BRINGS LARSON BACK AS ASSISTANT COACH:

Nebraska volleyball and U.S. Women’s National Team legend Jordan Larson has been named a full-time assistant coach for the Nebraska volleyball program.

Larson will join Cook and assistant coaches Jaylen Reyes and Kelly Hunter on the Husker staff once her summer playing schedule wraps up in September. The NCAA Division I Council adopted a proposal in January that, among other changes, allows teams that utilize a volunteer coach to add a full-time coach position beginning this season.

One of the greatest American volleyball players in history, Larson was the team captain, Best Outside Hitter and Most Valuable Player when the U.S. won its first Olympic women’s volleyball gold medal in Tokyo in 2021.

A native of Hooper, Neb., Larson was a standout on some of the greatest teams in program history from 2005 to 2008 and was inducted into the Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020. She helped Nebraska to a top-five NCAA Tournament finish in each of her four seasons. Her teams also claimed the 2006 National Championship and the runner-up finish in 2005.

KEARNEY SENIOR LEGION BASEBALL FALLS TO HASTINGS AT HOME:

The Kearney Runza Senior Baseball team worked themselves back from a three run hole by tying the game in the fifth inning, but gave up the winning run in the top of the sixth to drop the 4-3 contest at Memorial Field on Tuesday night.

Kearney (8-9) fell with three runs scored on six hits and three errors while Hastings won on four runs with six hits and no errors.

The Runza Seniors are currently competing in Norfolk as part of a doubleheader. First pitch was set for game one at 1:30 PM and the second game was scheduled to begin at 3:30.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL DUO CONTINUES HONORS WITH SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICANS:

Max Anderson and Brice Matthews added to their impressive haul of postseason accolades, as the Husker duo were recognized as Second-Team All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Tuesday.

Anderson was tabbed a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA’s District 6 Player of the Year earlier this month, while Matthews earned third-team All-America recognition from Collegiate Baseball. Both Huskers received first-team All-Central Region honors from ABCA/Rawlings earlier this week.

A semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and NCBWA District 6 Player of the Year, Anderson was a unanimous First-Team All-Big Ten honoree while hitting .414 with 20 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs, 70 RBI and 51 runs scored.

Matthews concluded his junior season batting .359 at the plate with 11 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs, 67 RBI and 61 runs scored as a First-Team All-Big Ten selection.

LOPER ATHLETICS FINISHES 38th IN LEARFIELD DIRECTORS’ CUP:

Nebraska-Kearney tallied 403.00 points to finish 38th in the race for the 2022-23 Learfield Directors’ Cup.

The Cup is the Division II “All-Sports” Trophy, given annually to the school that scores the most points at NCAA Championships over the fall, winter and spring seasons.

Ranking sixth among MIAA schools, this is UNK’s second straight year with 400.00 points and the 10th time overall.

The Blue & Gold scored 121.50 points in the fall, 152.5 in the winter and added 129.0 in the spring. Overall, UNK tallied points in men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, women’s basketball, wrestling, men’s indoor & outdoor track and women’s golf.

VEGAS BLASTS PANTHERS, CLAIM FIRST STANLEY CUP:

The Vegas Golden Knights delivered from dazzling passes to Mark Stone’s hat trick to all-out goal celebrations, capturing the young organization’s first title with a 9-3 romp over the beaten up and exhausted Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

Coach Bruce Cassidy, in a nod to the Knights’ brief history, started five of the original Vegas players known as the Misfits and put the sixth on the second shift. Cassidy sounded confident the day before the game that his team would play well, and it certainly did, blowing open a one-goal game in the second period to lead 6-1. The nine goals tied the record for the most in a Cup Final.

Vegas closed out the series in five games to win the cup before a delirious franchise-record crowd of 19,058 at T-Mobile Arena.
