Thursday Morning Sports – Runza Seniors Begin Day 2 of Prep Tournament, Huskers’ MBB Mast Added to Netherlands National Team, Grand Island Native Added to MLB HOF, NBA Draft Tonight, CWS Results, Sports Scores and Schedules

RUNZA SENIORS FALL IN FIRST MATCHUPS AT CWS PREP TOURNAMENT:

The Kearney Runza Seniors fell in their opening contests of the Creighton Prep CWS Tournament on Wednesday, evening their record to 11-11 on the year. 

In Game One, Kearney held a lead throughout much of the opening contest at Millard South, but a gruesome bottom of the sixth doomed the Runza Seniors in 12-5 loss.

Kearney fell by scoring five runs on six hits with one error while Millard South won with twelve runs on fourteen hits and one error.

In Game Two, Kearney dropped 9-6 to Rapid City, SD.The Runza Seniors dropped the matchup scoring six runs on seven hits and three errors. Rapid City won with nine runs on twelve hits and one error.

Kearney now awaits their next matchup tonight, taking on Bryant, Ark. at 7:30 PM at Millard South High School.

 

HUSKER MEN’S HOOPER MAST ADDED TO NETHERLANDS NATIONAL TEAM:

Nebraska forward Rienk Mast will look to help the Netherlands qualify for the 2024 Olympics later this summer, as he has been invited to join the senior national team for the first time since 2019.

Mast, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward, will be with the national team from late July until following the team’s FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Istanbul (Aug. 13-20). The schedule includes national team camp as well as exhibitions against Israel (Aug. 4) and Ukraine (Aug. 7). The teams in the Netherlands pool in Istanbul include Sweden (Aug. 13), Belgium (Aug. 14) and Croatia (Aug. 16). The semifinals are set for Aug. 18 with the finals set for Aug. 20.

Mast will be making his second senior National Team appearance and first since 2019. He played in the 2019 Basketball World Cup qualifier averaging 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in three contests. He also played for the Netherlands at the U18 and U16 levels earlier in his career.

Mast is the second Husker selected for his nation’s national team camp this week, joining Keisei Tominaga, who was named to Japan’s roster on Monday.

 

NEBRASKA NATIVE TO BE INDUCTED INTO NEBRASKA MLB HOF:

Grand Island native Terry Wetzel will be inducted into the Museum of Nebraska Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Paul on July 8, as first reported by KSNB.

Wetzel graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1975 and attended Concordia University in Seward. 

Wetzel was a member of the 1985 World Series Champions Kansas City Royals Scouting Department. In 1996, he was promoted to Senior Director of Scouting and was involved in all areas of Baseball Operations, scouting at the Major League, Minor League, International and amateur free agent levels. Wetzel remained with the Kansas City Royals organization for 17 years.

In 2000, Wetzel joined the Colorado Rockies organization as a Special Assignment Scout. He was a member of the 2007 National League Champions Colorado Rockies Scouting Department and was with the Rockies organization for 14 seasons.

 

NBA DRAFT BEGINS TONIGHT:

The NBA Draft begins tonight, aiming to find the next big superstars to carry the league for decades to come. 

Victor Wembanyama appears to be the consensus No. 1 pick – regarded as potentially the best prospect since LeBron James – and is ready to gear up his career with the San Antonio Spurs. 

After the No. 1 pick, anything can happen. Alabama’s Brandon Miller, Scoot Henderson, and many others appear to be in the running for the next round of lottery picks. 

The draft begins at 6:30 PM with coverage on ESPN and ABC.
