KEARNEY — The Slumberland Furniture location in Kearney donated beds to families in need across the local area during their 26th year participating in ‘Making Homes for The Holidays’ campaign.
“Through the 40 Winks Foundation and our Homes for the Holidays donation event, we’ve given more than 45,000 beds to families who would otherwise be sleeping on the floor,” Slumberland stated on their website.
On Tuesday, Dec. 19, volunteers along with the owners, employees and representatives from the organizations gathered for a brief presentation, followed by loading and delivering the mattresses to families in need.
This year, Slumberland teamed up with several area schools, Telemundo and the SAFE Center to find at risk children who are sleeping on the floor.
“This will be our 26th year participating in Making Homes for the Holidays with our over 1,170 beds given. It is by far the best day of the year and it is why we are in business. Giving back,” said Slumberland Co-Owner Gayle Bonnes.
Bonnes recounted a few stories of the families that will be benefited this year.
In one case, a single mother who has been diagnosed with breast cancer and her child have moved to Nebraska from out of state and have no furniture from home.
Another family spent a month at the SAFE Center in Kearney after escaping a severe domestic violence situation. They were able to find their own home to move into but had no furniture.
The last case Bonnes highlighted was a mother with four children and they need beds to wake up refreshed and ready for the school day.
“They deserve support,” said Bonnes.
To close, Bonnes quoted a Bible verse from Ephesians that states, “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love.”
These families will receive a brand-new mattress, box spring and frame. Additional gifts were sheets from The Caring Women’s Jr. Club, Teddy bears from the Tri-City Storm’s Teddy Bear Toss event, gift cards from Hy-Vee and homemade quilts from the Piecemakers Club located at Third City Christian Church in Grand Island.
“At Slumberland we donate more than 10 percent of our profits to organizations that assist families and youth within the communities we serve,” a press release stated.
