KEARNEY BASEBALL AIMS TO REBOUND HOSTING MUSTANGS:

In another mixed week of results, Kearney Baseball aims to punch through with key matchups this week at Memorial Field.

The Bearcats earned a ticket to the HAC Semifinals last week, falling to eventual conference tournament champion Lincoln East. Kearney then dropped a home tilt with rival and first-year program North Platte Saturday.

Kearney aims to defend their home diamond welcoming Millard North this afternoon. First pitch is set for 4 PM with KGFW’s pregame at 3:45 PM. Austin Jacobsen will have the action on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com.

HAC SOCCER BRACKETS RELEASED:

The Heartland Athletic Conference girls and boys soccer tournament brackets were announced on Sunday, with area teams competing for gold, silver, and bronze winnings in their respective brackets.

The HAC Soccer tournaments are broken into three different four-team pods; the Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The Kearney Girls and Boys are both placed in the Silver bracket, taking on Lincoln North Star Tuesday at 6 PM for the girls while the boys face an afternoon tilt with Lincoln Pius X at 1 PM.

Grand Island’s boys battle Norfolk tonight at 7 PM and the Islander girls face Lincoln Northeast tomorrow at 11 AM.

Full brackets, game matchups, kickoff times, and much more can be found at KGFW and Central Nebraska Today.

STORM FINISH REGULAR SEASON, BEGIN PLAYOFFS TONIGHT:

The Tri-City Storm completed its sixty-two games regular season Saturday night at Liberty First Credit Union Arena in a 5-1 loss to the Omaha Lancers on Saturday.

The Storm now returns home to the Viaero Center for an opening-round playoff series against the Sioux Falls Stampede. Tri-City will play host to the Stampede tonight at 7:05pm CT in the team’s first game of the playoffs.

The Storm have clinched the four-seed in the Western Conference.

All three games – if needed – in the Storm’s upcoming opening-round playoff series at the Viaero Center are scheduled to begin at 7:05 pm.

SCHEFFLER TAKES SECOND GREEN JACKET AT MASTERS:

Scottie Scheffler has won the 88th Masters in a final-nine runaway.

Scheffler carded a final-round, 4-under 68 at Augusta National Golf Club for an 11-under total, four strokes clear of Ludvig Åberg on a sun-kissed Sunday in Georgia. Scheffler earns his second green jacket and ninth PGA TOUR title.

Scheffler emerged from a four-way co-lead late in the front nine with six birdies in a 10-hole stretch around the turn, a decisive triumph.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL DROPS FIRST WEEKEND SERIES OF SEASON AT RUTGERS:

No. 23 Nebraska dropped its first weekend series of the season, as the Huskers fell 6-4 at Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at Bainton Field.

Nebraska (23-10, 6-3 Big Ten) scored four runs on nine hits and an error, while Rutgers (22-13, 3-6 Big Ten) totaled six runs on 10 hits.

The Big Red lost a heartbreaker in extra innings on Friday night, took down the Scarlet Knights 16-1 on Saturday, but could not muster enough to earn the New Jersey series.

Nebraska returns to action with a midweek tilt vs. Creighton at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park on Tuesday, April 16. First pitch between the Huskers and Bluejays is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

HUSKER SOFTBALL TAKES SCARLET KNIGHT SERIES WITH SUNDAY RALLY:

The Nebraska softball team erased a late five-run deficit and rallied for a 7-6 win over Rutgers in eight innings Sunday in a series-clinching victory for the Big Red.

Nebraska trailed 6-1 before tying the game with a five-run sixth inning. In the eighth, Peyton Cody drove in Billie Andrews with the winning run with a two-out RBI single. Sarah Harness then worked around a two-out walk in the bottom of the eighth to wrap up the win.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 25-16 on the season and moved to 8-3 in Big Ten play, including a 5-1 record on the road.

Nebraska remains on the road next weekend, when the Huskers travel to Ann Arbor for a three-game series with the Michigan Wolverines.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL ADDS 2025 RECEIVER:

Nebraska football added more speed to its 2025 recruiting class on Sunday as Maize (Kan.) wide receiver Bryson Hayes announced his commitment to the Huskers.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Hayes chose the Huskers over Kansas, Kansas State and others. He received an offer from the Big Red last summer at Nebraska’s Husker Football camp.

Hayes backed up the offer as a junior on the football field, making 60 catches for 962 yards and 10 touchdowns. He said in January that Nebraska sees him as an ideal fit for its offense.

ICYMI: HUSKER WOMEN ADD FLORIDA TRANSFER:

Nebraska Women’s Basketball received a commitment from Florida transfer guard, Alberte Rimdal. Rimdal announced the decision via Instagram on Saturday.

Rimdal is originally from Køge, Denmark, and spent 3 seasons playing for the Gators. In 2023-2024, she averaged 7.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. The 5-foot 9-inch guard started 50 games during her time at Florida and connected on 114 three pointers. She has also played for the Denmark national team.

Nebraska is losing their leader and three-point threat guard Jaz Shelley to graduation.

BRONCOS BASEBALL SWEPT BY MOUNT MARTY AT DUNCAN:

The Hastings College baseball team dropped two more games to Mount Marty 4-2 and 8-5 on a warm Sunday afternoon out on Duncan Field.

Hastings is now 12-30 (3-17) on the year and will be back in action Friday Apr. 19 as Dordt comes to town for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 2:00 pm out on Duncan Field.
