LOPER FOOTBALL HOSTS SPRING GAME:

The Nebraska-Kearney football team wraps up its 2024 spring season with an annual intrasquad scrimmage tonight at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The game begins at 6 p.m. with Operation NETS hosting a family-friendly tailgate (4:30 p.m.). The game should last around 90 minutes.

The format this year pits the “Blue” squad against the “White” squad. The coaching staff has also been divided with four assistants on each side. Head coach Ryan Held will observe and float between both teams.

On Wednesday, the coaching staff held a draft and divided the 100-player roster evenly. Due to injuries, the offensive line will wear “Gold” jerseys and could play on both teams. Quarterbacks also are in “Gold” and cannot be hit.

KEARNEY GRAD MOOMEY TO COMPETE AT U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS:

Phillip Moomey will go for the gold this weekend at University Park, Pennsylvania.

The Kearney High graduate will be competing in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Moomey is the ninth seed in the 60-kilogram weight class. He will meet eighth-seeded Taylor Lamont of Utah Valley State in his first match later today. The winner will battle Ildar Hafizov in the quarterfinals.

At only 23 years old, Moomey is one of the younger wrestlers in the field. The Cornell grappler most recently represented the United States in the Under-23 World Championships last year in Albania.

He also wrestled at the Under 23 World Championships in Spain the year before and, while at Kearney High, wrestled in the Cadet World Championships in Croatia.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL SPRING PRACTICE COMMENTS – TONY WHITE:

WHITE – NEXT WEEK DEFENSE PREVIEW:

Defensive coordinator for Nebraska Football Tony White addressed the media after Thursday’s practice, and spoke about his expectation for his players beginning next week for the final week of spring practices…

White added that his defense is trending in the right direction, and likes seeing the depth being built among the defensive line especially.

WHITE – RESERVES NEED REPS, HAVE TO BE READY TO START:

Tony White, Nebraska defensive coordinator, spoke to the media after Thursday’s session and was asked how frustrating it has been to not have defensive lineman Ty Robinson and Nash Hutmacher in the lineup…

Nebraska has held out their returning starters due to injuries and recovery for Robinson, and allowing Hutmacher to return back to his playing weight and shape after competing for the Husker Wrestling team in the offseason.

WHITE – SCRIMMAGE PROVED NOT GOOD ENOUGH:

Nebraska’s defense has been tested throughout the spring, as defensive coordinator Tony White stated to the media on Thursday that last weekend’s scrimmage was not up to the standard…

The Huskers have eight days to continue to prepare for the Red-White Spring Game at Memorial Stadium on April 27.

CARON ADDED TO AWARD WATCH LIST:
Nebraska catcher Josh Caron was named to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award Watch List, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Thursday afternoon.

Caron is batting .308 this season with eight doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 40 RBI and 25 runs scored.

The Sun Prairie, Wis., native has started 29 games behind the dish for the Huskers and is one of five catchers nationally with a .300-plus batting average and at least 15 extra-base hits and 40 runs driven in this season.

HUSKER BASEBALL BEGINS HOME SERIES WITH TERPS:

The Big Red hope to get back to more consistent winning as they continue their home stand welcoming Maryland for a weekend series.

Brett Sears will have the start for Nebraska to open the series tonight, as the Huskers hope to improve on their 1-4 mark against the Terrapins from 2023.

First pitch is set for after 6 PM with KGFW’s pregame coverage beginning at 5:30 PM. Tune in to Husker Baseball on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com.

LOPER SOFTBALL ADJUSTS HOME DOUBLEHEADER WEEKEND:

The Nebraska-Kearney softball team has moved up both of its home double headers this weekend at Patriot Park.

UNK (17-24, 5-13), battling for a MIAA Tournament spot, will face Newman (18-28, 24-15) on Friday and #6 Central Oklahoma (37-7, 17-1) on Saturday. Both double headers will now go off at 12 and 2 p.m. On the original schedule, it was to be 1 and 3 p.m. both days.

NEBRASKA SOFTBALL HEADS TO ANN ARBOR:

The Nebraska softball team travels to Ann Arbor this weekend for a pivotal three-game series with Michigan in a battle of two of the top three teams in the Big Ten standings.

Michigan (30-14) enters the weekend in second place in the Big Ten standings with an 11-3 conference record. Nebraska (25-16) is third in the standings with an 8-3 Big Ten record.

In addition to trying to improve their conference standing, Michigan and Nebraska are also looking to strengthen their position for a potential at-large NCAA Tournament berth.

Both the Huskers and Wolverines are in the top 50 of the NCAA RPI and each school has claimed its highest RPI ranking of the season this week.

First pitch is set for 6 PM tonight.
