GRAND ISLAND — The City of Grand Island Fire Department is reinstating the spring restrictive/open burn period scheduled for April 21 – May 4.

Consistent dry conditions and lack of forecasted precipitation led to a cancellation of the burn period back on April 11, but the heavy rains the area received in the week that followed that decision has led to the reinstatement.

The department also wants to remind residents the City of Grand Island Transfer Station accepts grass, leaves and tree branches at no charge to Grand Island residents within city limits. The station is located at 5050 West Old Potash Highway. The entrance to the Yard Waste Site is located on Monitor Road, which borders the Transfer Station property to the east. The Yard Waste Site was opened to the public on Monday, April 1, 2024.

Restrictions

Yard waste to be disposed of must be clean of waste and debris and must be emptied from garbage bags at the time of disposal. Customers delivering yard waste must ensure that loads are properly secured to prevent littering along the roadways. Free disposal of yard waste is only for homeowners and renters, not contractors for hire.

Hours of Operation

The Yard Waste Site is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the Yard Waste Site, citizens can call the Transfer Station at (308) 385-5433 & the Public Works Department at (308) 385-5455.
