BEARCAT BASEBALL FALLS TO CHIEFTANS; RETURNS HOME FOR SENIOR DAY:

A second road trip in two days proved too much to overcome for the Kearney baseball team, falling 5-3 to Bellevue East in the metro on Tuesday afternoon.

Kearney (13-11) had their three-game win streak snapped, scoring three runs on three hits and suffered four errors. Bellevue East (14-11) continued their winning streak, taking the win with five runs on six hits with one error.

The Bearcats return home to take on Class B’s Lincoln Northwest for the Falcons first trip to Kearney in their program’s history. Kearney will celebrate its Senior Day as well following the conclusion of the contest.

KGFW’s pregame coverage begins at 3:45 PM with first pitch at 4 PM. Join Austin Jacobsen with the action on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com.

HUSKER BASEBALL FAILS TO OVERCOME EARLY DEFICIT:

Nebraska couldn’t climb out of an early four-run deficit, as the Huskers fell 9-4 vs. Kansas on Tuesday night at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Nebraska (25-13) scored four runs on eight hits, while Kansas (22-15) totaled nine runs, 11 hits and an error.

Tyler Stone led the way for the Huskers, going 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the second inning. Cayden Brumbaugh finished 1-for-4 with an RBI double, while Riley Silva extended his on-base streak to 13 games and stole his 23rd base of the season.

Drew Christo fell to 1-3 on the season after giving up four runs on four hits in two innings. The junior recorded a season-high five strikeouts and issued two walks. Caleb Clark allowed one run on one hit with a pair of strikeouts in an inning of work.

Nebraska wraps up its homestand with a weekend series vs. Iowa on Friday-Sunday, April 26-28 at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. First pitch in Friday’s series opener between the Huskers and Hawkeyes is set for 6:05 p.m.

NEBRASKA SOFTBALL SWEEPS HAWKEYES IN HOME DOUBLEHEADER:

The Nebraska softball team swept a doubleheader from Iowa on Tuesday at Bowlin Stadium, posting walk-off wins in both games.

In game one, Bella Bacon had a walk-off two-out double in the eighth inning of Nebraska’s 1-0 victory. Kaylin Kinney threw an 8.0-inning shutout in the circle.

In game two, Iowa rallied from a four-run deficit and scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead. But Ava Bredwell hit a two-out walk-off home run to lift Nebraska to a 7-6 win.

Nebraska remains home this weekend when the Huskers host league-leading Northwestern in a three-game series at Bowlin Stadium on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

NORTH PLATTE NATIVE TRANSFERS TO NEBRASKA:

After a pit-stop at Montana, Vince Genatone is the latest in-state player to find a home at Nebraska.

Genatone, a three-sport star at North Platte in the 2022 class, spent his first two seasons at Montana. He entered the transfer portal earlier this year after his redshirt freshman season.

Yesterday, the North Platte native announced his commitment to the Big Red.

Genatone starred at both running back and linebacker at North Platte and was also a stand-out wrestler and track athlete. He ran the ball 100 times for 911 yards and 13 touchdowns and was among the state’s leaders in tackles with 136 including 14.5 for loss (3.5 sacks) as a senior, guiding the Bulldogs to a 7-4 record and state tournament appearance.

BRONCOS SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT DOANE:

The Hastings College softball team would lose two heartbreakers on Tuesday afternoon to Doane dropping game one 5-4 and game two 5-4 in 10 innings.

Hastings is now 15-27 (3-17) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Apr. 27 for senior day as Briar Cliff comes to town for the season finale with first pitch set for 1:00 pm out at the Smith Softball Complex.
