GRAND ISLAND — A suspect was arrested for kidnapping and child abuse following a stand off in Grand Island on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, investigators assisted Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services staff with the removal of a child who was currently in the State of Nebraska’s custody.

The child had been placed with his father, Dennis Acker, at a residence on N. Adams St.

Allegedly, Acker would refuse to open the door and turn over the child to DHHS upon request. Officers would observe Acker to be belligerent and irrational and brandish a knife in the direction of officers while inside the home and the child standing nearby.

Acker would allegedly force the child into the back bedroom and refuse to release the child after hours of negotiation, refusing to follow the officer’s order while placing the child in a dangerous situation.

A search warrant would later be obtained, and Acker would be arrested, while the child was safely released to DHHS.

Acker would be arrested for kidnapping, intentional child abuse – no injury and obstructing a peace officer.
