HASTINGS — Van Kirk Bros Contracting completed the installation of the casing and water main pipe across South Elm Avenue on Thursday Sept. 25, 2025.
The work began on Monday, Sept. 22.
The crossing had to be completed with an open trench method because of tight right-of-way constraints. The trench was backfilled and the roadway surfacing was replaced with high early strength concrete to allow the street to open sooner.
The concrete was poured around noon on Thursday. The concrete strength will be adequate to reopen the street to traffic by late Friday afternoon, Sept. 26.
Work in the area adjacent to South Elm Avenue will continue, but the street will remain open. Motorists are reminded to drive carefully through construction zones for both their safety and the safety of the workers.
