ARAPAHOE — On Jan. 24, 2025 at 3:58 p.m. Furnas County 911 received a call of a car versus truck motor vehicle crash approximately one-half mile south of the Arapahoe Golf Course on Highway 283.

Furnas County Deputies, HEA Fire & Rescue, Arapahoe Ambulance, Nebraska Department of Roads and Nebraska State Patrol responded to the scene.

Investigation found that the 2001 GMC Yukon driven by Christopher M. Herrick, 51, of Arapahoe, was northbound and crossed the center line striking a southbound, 2014 Mack 700 Conventional truck driven by David Sellstad, 52, and operated by Schaben Sanitation. Sellstad attempted evasive maneuvers by moving to the shoulder, almost completely leaving the roadway but was unable to avoid the collision as Herrick crossed over.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. Dead Sled Towing of Arapahoe and Randy and Brian’s Towing of Lexington responded.

Both drivers were transported to Tri-Valley Health Systems in Cambridge. Sellstad was treated and released. Christopher M Herrick was pronounced dead at Tri-Valley Hospital.

Seatbelt was in use in the truck. Airbags deployed and no safety restraint was in use in the Yukon. Intoxication is believed to have been a causative factor of the accident. Toxicology is pending.
