NEBRASKA FOOTBALL SATURDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS – MATT RHULE:

RHULE – TEAM IS TRENDING TO BEING HEALTHY:

Nebraska Football Head Coach Matt Rhule addressed the media after Saturday’s open practice and scrimmage, and gave a general health update from his squad…

Offensive tackle Teddy Prochaszka has been out since the first week of camp, while receiver Marcus Washington has been in-and-out of practices as well.

RHULE – SATURDAY SCRIMMAGE STEP IN RIGHT DIRECTION:

Matt Rhule, first year Nebraska Football Head Coach, was satisfied from the improvement he saw in his team after Saturday’s scrimmage and practice at Memorial Stadium…

The Huskers continue to trend toward their opening game coming up in ten days on Aug. 31 at Minnesota.

RHULE – FUMBLES, MISSED KICKS; MISCUES NEED CORRECTED:

Head Coach for Husker Football Matt Rhule spoke to the media after Saturday’s open scrimmage and said there is still some correction needed across the Big Red…

The Huskers will begin their preparation for their season opener at Minnesota later this week, after taking Sunday and Monday off from practice sessions for the start of the academic year.

RHULE – DEFENSE SHOWCASES FUNDAMENTALS AND BIG PLAYS:

Matt Rhule was impressed by his defense’s stout showing after Saturday’s scrimmage, and spoke about their high level of play in his media comments after…

Nebraska’s defense was a weak point in the opening weeks of the season last year, as the Blackshirts hope to showcase improvement beginning Big Ten play at Minnesota next week.

RHULE – PRACTICE SCHEDULE FOR START OF SCHOOL YEAR:

Nebraska Football has been in their preseason fall camp since July 31, and Head Coach Matt Rhule said after Saturday’s scrimmage it’s important to allow his team some time off with the start of the school year…

The Huskers have been on campus for over four weeks as classes begin today.

RHULE – CAM LENHARDT HANDLES MATURITY:

Last week, true freshman defensive end Cameron Lenhardt was named a preseason freshman All-American by media outlets. Head Coach Matt Rhule said he wasn’t surprised, due to the young up-and-comer’s maturity…

Lenhardt was a four star rated defensive end and has been listed as a rotational starter with incumbent Blaise Gunnerson for the Blackshirts.

ICYMI – RED BEATS WHITE IN HUSKER VOLLEYBALL SCRIMMAGE:

The Nebraska volleyball team began its 2023 season with its annual Red-White intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday night. The Red team won the tightly contested match, 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 27-25).

Points in the match were even at 96-96, and White nearly took it to a fifth set after charging back from a 19-6 deficit in set four to force a deuce game.

Harper Murray and Merritt Beason each had 13 kills to lead Red. They also had 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Ally Batenhorst had eight kills and 10 digs.

Nebraska opens their season on Friday evening, beginning the Ameritas Players Challenge in Lincoln against Utah State.

LOPER WOMEN’S SOCCER DOWNED BY HASTINGS IN EXHIBITION:

The UNK Women’s Soccer team started the fall sports season for the Lopers with a 2-1 loss in an exhibition match at Foster Field Sunday to Hastings.

UNK will have another exhibition on Saturday at noon hosting Augustana.

SPAIN DEFEATS ENGLAND FOR WOMEN’S WORLD CUP TITLE:

Spain defeated England 1-0 in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday, capping off a tournament that has broken attendance and TV records and raised hopes of a surge in interest for the women’s game.

Co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the ninth edition of the global showpiece event was the first to be held in the southern hemisphere.

An Olga Carmona goal was the difference between the two sides in a pulsating game that saw Spain create the majority of the clear-cut chances.

England and Spain were both making their first appearance at a Women’s World Cup final, while England’s wait for a first trophy since the men’s tournament in 1966 goes on.

VIKTOR HOVLAND SETS COURSE RECORD TO WIN BMW CHAMPIONSHIP:

Viktor Hovland kept hitting every shot just the way he wanted on the back nine at Olympia Fields.

With Rory McIlroy on his heels, Hovland kept one of the best rounds of his career ahead of the two-man race to break the course record at 9-under 61 to surge and win the BMW Championship.

The previous mark of 62 had been set twice this week on the rain-softened North course, by Sam Burns and Max Homa the previous two days. Hovland was so close to perfection that he birdied all but two holes on the back nine.

The Ryder Cup selection comes in eight days, as the U.S. team will compete against England.
