LPS CANCELS ACTIVITIES DUE TO EXTREME HEAT:

Lincoln Public Schools announced that all outdoor athletic contests for Tuesday and Wednesday will be postponed and rescheduled.

Following the NSAA guidelines, the forecasted Wet Bulb Globe Temperature for those days is too high to safely hold contests for all involved.

This postponement does affect Kearney High Softball, as the Bearcats were scheduled to compete at Lincoln Northeast on Wednesday. That game has now been moved to next Monday, Aug. 28.

LPS said they will continue to monitor the weather and forecasts for later Thursday and Friday, and make adjustments to contest times and days as needed.

The heat wave is expected to subside enough by the end of the week that most football season openers should not be significantly affected.

Kearney Football plays Lincoln East at UNK’s Ron & Carol Cope Stadium on Friday night.

LOPER FOOTBALL ADJUSTS PRACTICE SCHEDULE:

Due to the anticipated extreme heat conditions expected in Kearney this week, the Loper Football team will adjust their practice schedule to change for more evening sessions.

The team was off for Monday as the student-athletes returned to classes for the semester. Today’s practice has been moved to 7-9 PM as well as Thursday’s practice to the same time frame. The original practice times were set for mid-to-late afternoon.

UNK will also hold a refereed scrimmage on Wednesday evening.

The Lopers continue to prepare for their opening season contest at Central Oklahoma on August 31.

MICHIGAN FOOTBALL SELF-IMPOSED HARBAUGH SUSPENSION:

After the NCAA reportedly was set to suspend Michigan Football Head Coach Jim Harbaugh for recruitment violations, the Wolverine football program assessed a self-imposed ban on their head coach.

Harbaugh will not be on the sidelines for Michigan’s first three matchups of the season – all home games against East Carolina on Sept. 2, UNLV on Sept. 9, and Bowling Green on Sept. 16. The Michigan alum will return to the sidelines for the start of the Big Ten schedule as the Wolverines host Rutgers on Sept. 23.

Nebraska will host Michigan on Sept. 30 at Memorial Stadium.

NEBRASKA MEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON TICKETS ON SALE:

Nebraska Men’s Basketball season tickets are now available and on-sale via the Nebraska Ticket Office.

The 20-game home schedule includes 19 regular-season contests and features 10 games against teams that reached postseason play a year ago, including Big Ten champion Purdue and national player of the year Zach Edey.

Seven other Big Ten teams on the 2023-24 home schedule joined Purdue in postseason play last season, including Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers and Wisconsin.

The Huskers welcomes back five of its top eight scorers from a team that went 16-16 and won six of its final eight Big Ten contests.

Season tickets in the 300 Level are available for $180 apiece, including fee.

COLTS ALLOW DISGRUNTLED RUNNING BACK TO SEEK TRADE:

The Indianapolis Colts have given disgruntled running back Jonathan Taylor permission to find a trade partner as of Monday.

Just two days earlier it was reported Taylor would rejoin the team Sunday following an excused absence to tend to a personal matter. Then on Sunday, it was announced Taylor would travel with the Colts to Philadelphia, where the teams will hold a joint practice Tuesday before playing their preseason finale Thursday.

Taylor has not practiced since the end of last season because of offseason ankle surgery.
