NEBRASKA BASEBALL CANCELS MIDWEEK MATCHUP WITH WILDCATS:

Nebraska’s baseball game at No. 23 Kansas State tonight has been canceled due to forecasted cold temperatures.

The Huskers open Big Ten play this weekend, as Nebraska travels to Northwestern for a three-game series on Friday-Sunday, March 29-31.

TROY DANNEN INTRODUCED AS NEBRASKA ATHLETIC DIRECTOR:

Nebraska Athletics has anointed their next leader of the Big Red.

Troy Dannen had his formal introduction today for Nebraska Athletics as the new Athletic Director, replacing the role left vacant by former AD Trev Alberts.

Dannen arrives from the University of Washington, having served as its athletic director since October of 2023.

Dannen’s press conference comments can be found at KGFW and Central Nebraska Today.

HUSKER BASKETBALL SEES TWO MEN’S PLAYERS ENTER PORTAL; STEWART ENTERS FOR WOMEN:

Three players entered the transfer portal in total from Nebraska basketball rosters yesterday, as both teams had their respective seasons come to an end over the past weekend in the NCAA Tournament.

The Husker Men lost Eli Rice and Ramel Lloyd Jr. to the portal Monday, as Rice showed promise his freshman season hitting three point shots off the bench against Kansas State and Michigan State. Rice suffered a high-ankle sprain in January that kept him off the floor the remainder of the year.

Rice finished the year averaging 4.2 points and 1.6 assists with a 41.3 percent shooting percentage.

Lloyd Jr. also entered the portal after two seasons with the Big Red but not appearing in any contests. Lloyd averaged 5.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game, ranking second in rebounding and third in both assists and steals while posting a team-best 4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio during a pre-season Spain exhibition.

Finally for the Women’s squad, forward Annika Stewart will enter the transfer portal after four seasons with the Huskers.

The 6-foot-3 junior came to Nebraska in 2020, and played all 26 games as a true freshman. She appeared in 27 games in 2021-22 and played in all 33 games in 2022-23 totaling 111 contests over four years.

This past season, Stewart came on strong down the stretch. She scored 12 points over three games at the Big Ten Tournament, and made two 3-pointers in the Huskers’ season-ending loss to Oregon State on Sunday.

GPAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR REGGIE THOMAS ENTERS PORTAL:

Hastings College guard and 2024 GPAC Player of the Year Reggie Thomas has entered the transfer portal.

The Omaha native and Westside grad played two seasons for the Broncos. In the 2023-24 season, Thomas averaged more than 24 points per game leading Hastings to its first ever GPAC title.

Thomas will have two years of eligibility remaining after completing a transfer.

CREIGHTON WOMEN FALL TO UCLA, ENDS SEASON IN ROUND OF 32:

Despite 52 combined points from seniors Lauren Jensen, Morgan Maly and Emma Ronsiek, the Creighton women’s basketball season came to an end on Monday, March 25 as the Bluejays fell to No. 6 UCLA, 67-63 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

With the win, UCLA (27-6) advances to next Saturday’s Regional semifinals in Albany against LSU.

The Bluejays end their season at 26-6 overall, including a 15-3 Big East record.

OHTANI CLAIMS INNOCENCE IN GAMBLING DEBTS:
Shohei Ohtani said Monday he never bet on sports or knowingly paid any gambling debts accumulated by his longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara.

Instead, the Los Angeles Dodgers star claims his close friend lied to him for years and stole millions from the two-time MVP.

Ohtani gave his version of events during a news conference at Dodger Stadium, five days after Mizuhara was fired by the Dodgers following reports from the Los Angeles Times and ESPN about his alleged ties to an illegal bookmaker and debts well over $1 million.

Ohtani left the Los Angeles Angels in December to sign a record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers. Ohtani and Mizuhara had been daily companions from Ohtani joining the Angels in 2018 until last week, when Mizuhara’s gambling became public.
